Comfrey plant, also known as Symphytum officinale, is an herbaceous perennial plant native to Europe, belonging to the Boraginaceae family.
It grows in damp areas along paths or at the forest edge, with a lifespan of 20 years.
It reaches 50 to 60 cm in height with a diameter of 30 to 80 cm.
The root system relies on a massive, fleshy, blackish taproot that colonizes the soil up to a depth of two meters.
This vigorous root draws essential trace elements from deep layers, making the plant self-sufficient and particularly resistant.
Its suckering capacity is such that a simple fragment of root left in the ground is enough to regenerate a new specimen.
The foliage unfolds in a dense rosette of oblong, pointed, dark green leaves that then spread along the flowering stems.
The leaf blade is covered with stiff, abundant hairiness, giving the plant a rough touch characteristic of the Boraginaceae family.
The flowers are tubular and drooping bells. Their colour palette ranges from intense mauve to creamy white, creating an elegant visual contrast with the raw green of the stems.

Thanks to its powerful root system, it draws potassium and magnesium from deep within the soil to return them to your crops.
Preparing its liquid manure (1 kg of leaves to 10 litres of water, steeped for three weeks, and diluted to 10%) is an essential technique for boosting the flowering and vitality of your crops.
Used as direct mulch, it decomposes rapidly, enriching the soil while preserving its moisture.
Biodiversity and historical interest
Beyond its role as a fertiliser, Comfrey is an essential melliferous species.
Its bell-shaped flowers attract pollinators throughout the season, ensuring the ecological balance of your space.
Historical note: in ancient cuisine, its leaves were sometimes consumed for their iodine-like taste.
However, due to the natural presence of alkaloids, this usage must be strictly occasional and limited. It is primarily cultivated today for its fertilising properties.
The ideal substrate for this perennial is a humus-rich, deep, and loose garden soil with a high nitrogen content.
It tolerates heavy clay soils thanks to its ability to decompact the lower layers of the soil.
Regarding luminosity, full sun exposure favours massive biomass production and intense nectar-rich flowering.
However, it accepts a semi-shaded situation, which avoids excessive evapotranspiration of its large leaves.
Its exemplary hardiness allows it to withstand harsh winters with temperatures dropping down to -20°C without irreversible damage.
The rootstock enters winter dormancy to protect its nutrient reserves before vigorous regrowth in spring.
Water needs are high during the rooting phase, requiring a soil kept cool to support its active metabolism.
