Sticky Carnivorous Leaves  

The deadly sundew and the Dionea (Venus flytrap) employ a method that can be described as semi-active. The leaves of these plants are covered with glandular hairs bearing tiny, sticky droplets that are highly attractive to insects. After capturing prey, the hairs on the leaves bend toward the leaf blade, initiating digestion through the plant’s enzymes.

Another mechanism found in some carnivorous plants does not involve movement of the plant itself. For example, Nepenthes and Sarracenia have leaf extensions that form a pitcher or a trumpet-shaped trap for insects and small animals. These are called “pitcher plants.” These traps, infused with sweet nectar, attract insects. Once inside, the insects cannot escape and are ultimately digested by the plant.

Plant Jaws  

The Venus flytrap captures its prey with jaw-like traps. It catches its prey using sensitive hairs located on the lobes of its leaves. This rapid movement is visible to the naked eye, and the prey becomes trapped. Having carnivorous plants at home allows you to enjoy and admire the ingenuity of these fascinating plants.
