Cassia fistula GOLDEN SHOWER TREE (5 seeds)

Golden Shower Tree, also known as Cassia, Senna, or Indian Laburnum, belongs to the Fabaceae family.
It is a tropical tree native to the dry regions of India and Sri Lanka and can reach a height of about ten meters.

Its foliage consists of oval, smooth, and glossy leaflets arranged in opposite pairs. They are a vibrant green, thick, and slightly curved. The flowers form magnificent hanging clusters, usually of a golden yellow color. Each flower has five spreading petals with a darker center, creating an attractive contrast.

The fruits are long, cylindrical pods, generally measuring between 30 and 50 cm in length. As they ripen, they turn brown and crack open to release the seeds.

Indian laburnum seeds of the Cassia fistula are brown, teardrop-shaped, and measure 1 centimeter in length.

- Germination and Sowing:

• The best period to sow Senna seeds is from mid-May to the end of July.
• Soak the seeds for 6 hours in lukewarm water to break dormancy.
• Plant them 1 cm deep in small 5x5 cm pots using pre-moistened potting soil or peat.
• Place the culture in a warm, humid environment, such as a greenhouse, at a temperature near 30°C.
• Germination typically begins between 2 and 4 weeks after sowing.

- Soil Type:

The soil should be light, well-draining, and rich in organic matter. It tolerates slightly acidic to neutral pH levels but avoid heavy clay soils that retain too much water.

- Exposure:

This tree thrives in full sun for optimal development. It can tolerate partial shade, but growth and flowering will be less abundant.

- Temperature & Hardiness:

Its hardiness is low; it prefers warm temperatures between 20°C and 35°C. It does not like the cold and must be protected from frost, which can cause significant damage.

- Watering:

Water needs are regular during the growing season. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Younger trees require more frequent watering during the summer.

- Propagation:

Primarily done by seeds or cuttings. Cuttings can be successful if taken from semi-green (semi-hardwood) shoots during the summer.

- Pests and Diseases:

The Golden Shower Tree can be attacked by scale insects, aphids, or caterpillars. It is recommended to use natural insecticidal treatments to manage these pests.
