Description

Globe Amaranth is a perennial plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. Although native to the Amazon, it is now found all over the world. It is a small, relatively fast-growing plant that generally reaches a height of 20 cm.

Its foliage is dense and dark green. The leaves, ranging from oval to lanceolate, are typically 2 to 5 cm long. They have a slightly rough texture and are arranged alternately along the stems.

The flowers appear as small spherical heads, measuring 2 to 4 cm in diameter. Generally grouped in terminal inflorescences, they come in a palette of colors ranging from purple, pink, and red to white. The flowers, which resemble pom-poms, attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies while adding a decorative touch to any garden or outdoor space.

The fruits are achenes—small seeds that form after pollination. These achenes are generally hard and brownish in color.

Globe Amaranth seeds from the Gomphrena globosa are brown and are found inside a very light white down, which allows them to be easily carried by the wind.

- Interests / Properties:

This plant is used both in medicine and as an ornamental crop.

In medicine, its root contains many therapeutic benefits. The leaves and flowers are said to have antioxidant properties. In certain cultures, it is used to treat various ailments. Do not use for medicinal purposes without seeking medical advice.

It is highly recommended for people over 50, stressed individuals, and athletes.

It is very popular in ornamental gardens thanks to its colorful flowers. It is found in flower beds and borders. Its abundant flowering makes it an attractive plant, particularly interesting because it requires very little maintenance.

- Germination and Sowing of Seeds:

  • The ideal period to sow Gomphrena globosa begins in May.
  • Prepare a tray of fine potting soil.
  • Sow the seeds on top, spacing them out.
  • Sprinkle fine substrate over them to a height of 3 to 4 millimeters.
  • Water the culture gently with a sprayer.
  • Finally, place the planting in a greenhouse at a temperature of approximately 30°C.
  • Germination will generally begin 2 to 4 weeks after sowing.

- Substrate / Soil Type:

Globe Amaranth grows very well in well-drained, light soil rich in humus and organic matter. A mixture of 40% horticultural potting soil, 20% fine sand, and 40% homemade compost is perfect for its development.

- Exposure / Sunlight:

This plant loves full sun. A sunny location is essential for its abundant and colorful flowering. It can tolerate light shade, but optimal sunlight will allow it to grow to its full potential.

- Temperature / Hardiness:

It is a frost-sensitive plant and prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 20°C and 30°C. In areas where temperatures drop below 0°C, it is recommended to grow it in a pot so it can be brought indoors during winter.

- Watering:

It requires moderate watering during the spring and summer. Excess water can lead to root rot issues, while a lack of water can affect its flowering. Watering every two days seems effective for its growth.

- Multiplication:

Its primary mode of reproduction is by seed. Propagation by cuttings is also possible during the summer.

- Pests / Diseases:

It is relatively resistant to pests. However, it can be subject to attacks by aphids, scale insects, and red spider mites. Regular monitoring and natural treatments like black soap can help control these infestations.
