Description

Lapacho, Golden trumpet tree, Yellow Flamboyant, or Tabebuia chrysotricha in Latin, is a fast-growing, non-hardy tree belonging to the Bignoniaceae family. Native to tropical regions of America reaching as far as Mexico, it easily attains a height of 10 meters at maturity. It is a beautiful exotic variety known in Paraguay by the name Lapacho.

Its deciduous foliage is lush and attractive. It possesses compound leaves, often palmate, which can measure up to 30 cm in length. The leaflets, usually numbering five to seven, are shiny and a vibrant green, providing a lovely texture to the tree. In autumn, the leaves of certain species may take on golden hues before falling.

Its flowers are undoubtedly one of its most remarkable features. They bloom in majestic clusters, often trumpet-shaped, and come in shades of yellow. Flowering takes place in the spring, creating a true floral firework display when the tree is in full bloom.

Its fruits are woody capsules that open at maturity to release small, winged seeds. These capsules, which can reach up to 30 cm in length, are often dark brown and form after the flowering period.

Yellow Flamboyant seeds are flat in shape and possess small wings. Seed dispersal generally occurs via the wind, allowing new plants to establish themselves nearby and contributing to the natural regeneration of the species.

- Uses:

It is primarily cultivated as an ornamental plant for its magnificent yellow flowering. It is widely planted in gardens and landscapes for its splendid, vibrant flowers.

In traditional medicine, parts of the Tabebuia tree, such as its bark and leaves, are used for their numerous health benefits.

Due to its durability, longevity, and aesthetic appeal, Ipé is also a species whose exotic wood is used for the construction of terraces and other outdoor furniture.

Its brownish color with golden or red nuances is extremely resistant and robust, yet elegant. It is an excellent exotic wood for outdoor construction or joinery.

- Germination and Sowing of Seeds:

  • The most favorable period for sowing Lapacho is from May and June when it is sufficiently warm.
  • Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 12 hours before starting the germination process.
  • Sow them flat in a substrate that is airy and rich in organic matter.
  • Cover them with 1 to 2 millimeters of substrate.
  • Water the culture gently with a hand sprayer.
  • Place the culture in a warm and humid location.
  • Germination will generally begin between 2 to 4 weeks after planting.

- Soil Type / Substrate:

Use a well-draining substrate. A mix of light potting soil, sand, and perlite is perfectly suitable to promote good root aeration. It is important to avoid soils that are too compact or clayey, as they retain too much moisture.

- Exposure / Light:

This tree loves full sun and requires bright exposure to thrive. It is recommended to plant it in a spot where it receives at least 6 to 8 hours of sun per day. A sunny exposure will encourage abundant flowering and rapid growth.

- Temperatures / Hardiness:

This subtropical tree prefers warm temperatures. It develops ideally in temperatures between 20 and 30 °C. It is sensitive to frost and does not tolerate temperatures below 5 °C. In areas where cold is a concern, it is preferable to grow it in a pot so it can be brought indoors or protected during winter.

- Watering / Irrigation:

Watering should be moderate and adapted to the plant's needs. During the active growth period, regular watering every 3 days is necessary, but the soil should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings to avoid water accumulation. In winter, watering should be reduced as the tree enters dormancy.

- Reproduction / Multiplication:

The Tabebuia reproduces primarily through sexual means via the pollination of its flowers, which are often very colorful and attract various pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. It can also be propagated by cuttings, where stem segments are planted to give rise to new individuals.

- Pests:

This species is generally resistant, but it can be affected by certain pests. Among the most common are caterpillars and aphids, which can weaken the tree by sucking the sap. Termites can also cause damage by tunneling galleries inside the wood.
