Mimosa pudica TOUCH-ME-NOT (plant)

Shameplant, also known as Sensitive Plant, Touch-me-not, or scientifically as Mimosa pudica, is a truly surprising tropical shrub. It typically measures about 30 cm in height.

Its branches are thorny, thin, and flexible, covered in green bark that can become brownish over time. The branches are often branched, allowing the plant to develop a bushy shape.

The leaves are compound and pinnate. Each leaf can contain 10 to 30 leaflets, which are generally bright green and oval. This foliage has the unique ability to fold rapidly when touched to protect itself from herbivores. As soon as the danger seems to have passed, the leaves unfold again.

Flowering occurs primarily during the warm summer months, though this can vary depending on climatic conditions and the environment in which it is grown. The flowers appear in clusters and have a "pom-pom" appearance, making them quite attractive.

- Properties:

Mimosa pudica is mainly grown as an ornamental plant due to its spectacular reaction to touch. Its leaves instantly fold upon physical contact, making it a fascinating curiosity for indoor gardens.

In some medicinal traditions, extracts from this plant are used for their soothing and healing properties. They are sometimes found in natural care products designed to relieve minor skin inflammations.

- Cultivation and Planting:

• Plant shameplant in a 5-liter pot using horticultural potting soil mixed with peat, covering it just above the root collar.
• Ensure the bottom of the pot is well-drained before planting.
• Lightly pack the substrate.
• Water copiously at the base during planting.
• Place it preferably in a very bright and warm location.

- Substrate:

It prefers a light substrate that ensures good drainage. A mixture of standard potting soil, perlite, or horticultural sand can be used. This helps avoid water accumulation, which could lead to root problems.

- Watering / Water Requirements:

Watering needs are frequent, but it is essential to avoid overwatering to limit the risk of root rot.

- Exposure:

It loves full light exposure but can also acclimatize to partial shade. A sunny location promotes optimal growth.

- Hardiness:

As a tropical herb, it is not frost-resistant. It prefers temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. Outside of these conditions, especially if temperatures drop below 10°C, it is best to grow it indoors.

It is subject to various diseases; among them are fungal infections such as powdery mildew and rust, which can cause leaf spots and wilting.

- Reproduction / Multiplication:

Its primary mode of reproduction is by seedling. It is also possible to take cuttings by cutting healthy stem sections, removing the lower leaves, planting them in a moist substrate, and covering them with a plastic bag to create a humid environment.
