Ginseng is a herbaceous plant native to Northeast Asia. This slow-growing perennial measures 30 to 50 cm in height and belongs to the Araliaceae family.
Its foliage is deciduous, and it grows in Korean woodlands.
The flowers are white, umbrella-shaped, and bloom from June onwards. They do not emit any scent.
Its fruits are bright red, smooth, and rounded in shape. They measure about 1 cm in length and typically contain 2 seeds per fruit. Fruit production occurs during the summer.
Ginseng seeds, derived from Panax quinquefolius, are white, sometimes red or slightly yellow, rounded, rough in texture, and about 5 millimeters in diameter.
Its roots are gray, thick, and over 30 cm long. They resemble a human body in shape, similar to mandrake roots, and are harvested at the end of the year.
The benefits of this plant are well recognized, notably its antioxidant properties. Its 4-year-old root is primarily a stimulant, commonly used to combat stress, physical fatigue, or mental exhaustion. It also helps boost the immune system. Additionally, it is considered an excellent aphrodisiac. As it is endangered, it is classified among rare plants.
The plant thrives in slightly acidic, deep, and well-drained soil.
This small, rare woodland plant usually grows in shaded areas. It requires partial sunlight with no direct rays. It prefers filtered light. For indoor cultivation, fluorescent or horticultural LED lights are recommended.
It grows well when temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C. It does not tolerate heat well, so a cool location is important. It is quite hardy and can withstand cold temperatures, making it suitable for outdoor cultivation. Its USDA hardiness zone is 6-9.
This plant prefers moist conditions, so the soil should always be kept damp but not waterlogged. About one watering per week is sufficient for healthy growth.
The most effective method is sowing at the end of winter. It can also be propagated by root division in autumn.
It is not particularly susceptible to diseases or pest attacks.
