Meadowsweet, also known as herbal aspirin or Filipendula ulmaria in Latin, is a hardy perennial plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is a leafy plant that measures on average 60 cm in height, with an upright habit, a slightly reddish stem, and creeping roots.
Its star-shaped white flowers are fragrant and open during the summer period.
Meadowsweet seeds are shaped like small beans measuring 3 millimeters in length, with one rounded side and a small point at the tip. They are brownish-green in color.
Its leaves are oval and serrated, with a dark green color. They release a pleasant almond scent when rubbed.
It is known for its medicinal virtues, notably for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties similar to aspirin.
This plant is generally consumed as an infusion of the flowers. Finally, it is also used in herbal medicine to relieve joint pain.
Do not consume without medical advice from a healthcare professional.
It generally grows in fresh, well-aerated, and rather alkaline soils.
This species needs plenty of light to grow well; a full sun exposure in the garden will suit it perfectly.
As a hardy perennial, it regrows every year; it does not fear harsh winters and easily resists temperatures down to -20°C.
Its environment is very often moist, without being in waterlogged ground. The most effective solution is to mulch the base of the plant with grass clippings to limit the need for watering.
There are two ways to multiply it: either by sowing seeds or by dividing its root system at the beginning of spring.
This medicinal plant can be attacked by pests such as aphids and slugs.
