Description

Chinese mugwort, Sweet wormwood, also known as Qinghao, annual mugwort, or Artemisia annua, is an annual plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Its yellow flowering begins during the summer period.

Its flowers are tiny, measuring only a few millimeters.

Its very fine foliage releases a highly aromatic scent when touched.

- Uses:

The most famous use of Artemisia annua lies in the production of artemisinin, an essential compound for modern antimalarial treatments. This molecule is extracted from the plant's leaves to formulate combination therapies that save millions of lives every year. Beyond malaria, current scientific research is exploring its potential to inhibit the proliferation of certain cancer cells and to fight various parasitic infections.

In traditional medicine, particularly Chinese medicine, this plant is used in the form of herbal teas, powders, or macerations to regulate feverish states. It is recognized for its digestive properties and its ability to stimulate the immune system. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant virtues also make it a popular remedy for relieving joint pain and protecting the body against oxidative stress.
Do not consume without medical advice from a healthcare professional.

In the agricultural and environmental sector, annual mugwort is used as a natural biopesticide thanks to its richness in essential oils and flavonoids. Its extracts help repel certain harmful insects and limit the development of pathogenic fungi without polluting the soil. Additionally, it is sometimes integrated into livestock feed to improve animal gut health and reduce the use of antibiotics in farming.

- Cultivation and Planting:

  • Plant the specimen in a 3 to 4-liter pot with good horticultural potting soil rich in organic matter, or directly in compost.
  • Drain the bottom of the pot with clay pebbles or gravel.
  • Water the base of the plant gently during planting.
  • For cultivation in the ground, allow a spacing of 1 to 1.50 meters between each plant.

- Location and Growth Zone:

Qinghao requires a lot of sun. It is best to find a very bright and warm spot for it. It grows well in USDA Zone 6.

- Irrigation:

In the ground: It is recommended to water the plant once a week.

In pots: Water when the leaves begin to droop and the substrate becomes dry.

- Diseases:

Brown spots may occasionally appear on the leaves, which is a sign of a fungal disease. A treatment with Bordeaux mixture (bouillie bordelaise) will be necessary to treat this condition.
