Description

Genepi, also known as glacier mugwort, alp wormwood or Artemisia umbelliformis in Latin, is a slow-growing European aromatic plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is a small, creeping perennial herb of the Alpine mountains, generally measuring 20 cm in height.

Its flowers, though modest in appearance, possess a delicate beauty. They bloom in clusters at the top of slender stems, offering a color palette ranging from pale yellow to creamy white. Each flower is composed of several petals, often star-shaped.

The leaves are narrow and elongated, often of a silvery green. They are covered in tiny hairs that give them a velvety appearance, allowing them to resist the rigorous climatic conditions of high altitudes. Their texture is slightly aromatic, releasing subtle scents when crushed.

Genepi seeds are tiny, gray, and covered with a downy fuzz that allows them to be easily dispersed by the wind.

- Properties and Uses:

Liqueur: This small Alpine plant is primarily sought after for making Genepi liqueur, its most common use. This liqueur is highly valued for its very aromatic taste and is often used as a digestive aid after a large meal.

Ornamental: It is also a beautiful bedding plant with a pleasant summer scent. Extremely cold-resistant, it can be grown in Alpine garden regions as an ornamental plant.

Tradition: As a symbol of Alpine culture, its harvest and use are deeply linked to local traditions.

Safety Note: Like its relatives, it contains thujone, a potentially dangerous molecule. It should be consumed in moderation.

Genepi Liqueur Recipe: Macerate 40 sprigs in one liter of 40% brandy (or fruit alcohol) for 40 days. Filter. Add 30 sugar cubes and enjoy.
Alcohol abuse is harmful to your health; please drink in moderation.

- Germination and Sowing:

  • The best period to sow glacial mugwort is from November to February.
  • It is imperative to stratify the seeds for 2 to 4 months in the refrigerator or by leaving them outside all winter.
  • Sprinkle them onto a horticultural potting soil substrate without burying them.
  • Water gently with a hand sprayer.
  • Place the culture in a spot with a temperature between 10°C and 15°C.
  • Germination usually begins 4 to 6 weeks after sowing. Note: This plant is extremely sensitive to summer drought.
  • Plant in a sunny, rocky location but keep the base of the plant in the shade.

- Substrate and Soil Type:

It prefers well-drained and rather light soil. A mixture of soil, sand, and gravel is ideal. It is important that the soil be nutrient-poor, as the plant flourishes in the harsh conditions typical of its natural mountain habitat.

- Exposure and Sunlight:

It requires a very sunny exposure to thrive. It loves bright environments, which promote growth and the production of aromatic compounds. Full sun throughout the day is recommended.

- Temperature and Hardiness:

Adapted to cold climates, this variety prefers cool temperatures. It can survive heavy frosts but cannot tolerate temperatures above 20°C in the summer.

- Irrigation:

Watering should be moderate. While it needs moisture, it is sensitive to overwatering, which can easily lead to root rot. Water only when the surface soil is very dry, ensuring good drainage. Once established, the plant is drought-resistant.

- Maintenance:

Maintenance is minimal. Prune dry branches and leaves. For pot culture, a slow-release fertilizer can be beneficial starting from the second year of planting.
