Night-blooming jasmine, lady of the night, or night-scented jessamine is a fast-growing exotic shrub reaching 2 to 3 meters in height, belonging to the Solanaceae family. Cestrum is native to Chile and Peru in South America.
Its nocturnal flowering is white in color. Its flowers are highly fragrant during the summer period until the end of autumn. The scent of the "midnight perfume" flowers is very powerful; a very pleasant feminine fragrance is released, attracting many nocturnal butterflies.
The leaves are long, narrow, and a glossy dark green. They have a smooth texture and slightly wavy edges.
Its fruits are small, round berries that are white when ripe. They generally contain 1 to 2 seeds per fruit.
Night-blooming jasmine, is primarily cultivated for its intense and enchanting fragrance that is released only at dusk. Its small tubular flowers, although visually discreet, scent tropical and Mediterranean gardens during summer evenings. This ornamental plant is thus favored for creating sensory gardens or for bordering terraces and nightlife areas.
In some traditional medicines, various parts of the plant are used for their potential pharmacological properties. Leaf extracts are sometimes used topically to treat skin irritations or mild inflammations due to their bioactive compounds.
Do not use for medicinal purposes without seeking medical advice.
The perfumery industry is also interested in this unique essence to compose rich and mysterious floral fragrances. This plant often symbolizes nightlife and understated elegance in contemporary botanical compositions.
It will generally bloom from the first year; the more sun it receives, the more fragrant flowers it will produce.
Cestrum nocturnum needs a substrate rich in organic matter to grow properly.
It must be placed in full sun so that it can grow well and bloom in abundance.
The plant loves temperatures above 25°C, where it will thrive and grow very quickly. This exotic shrub is sensitive to cold; it withstands low temperatures down to 5°C but will unfortunately not survive freezing winter temperatures.
Despite the fact that the Mesk-Ellil plant is tropical, it often requires regular watering during the summer period. Mulching the base with grass clippings will limit the frequency of watering and provide it with nitrogen.
The "midnight perfume" can be propagated in two different ways: either by sowing seeds at the beginning of the summer season, or by taking stem cuttings 10 to 15 cm long from early spring until the end of summer.
To maintain it well, simply cut away dead wood once a year. It is also recommended to prune it slightly starting in November.
