Description

Night-blooming jasmine, lady of the night, or night-scented jessamine is a fast-growing exotic shrub reaching 2 to 3 meters in height, belonging to the Solanaceae family. Cestrum is native to Chile and Peru in South America.

Its nocturnal flowering is white in color. Its flowers are highly fragrant during the summer period until the end of autumn. The scent of the "midnight perfume" flowers is very powerful; a very pleasant feminine fragrance is released, attracting many nocturnal butterflies.

The leaves are long, narrow, and a glossy dark green. They have a smooth texture and slightly wavy edges.

Its fruits are small, round berries that are white when ripe. They generally contain 1 to 2 seeds per fruit.

- Uses:

Mesk-Ellil: The Enchanting Scent of Night-Blooming Jasmine

Mesk-Ellil, also known as Night-Blooming Jasmine, is an ornamental plant famous for its intense fragrance that is only released at nightfall. Its discreet flowers scent Mediterranean and tropical gardens during summer evenings, making it an essential ally for sensory gardens. Ideal for bordering a terrace or an outdoor living area, it brings a touch of mysterious elegance and a unique olfactory experience to your exterior.

Traditional Uses and the Perfume Industry

Due to its rich olfactory signature, Mesk-Ellil is a major source of inspiration for high perfumery, where it symbolizes nocturnal refinement. In some traditional medicines, its leaves rich in bioactive compounds are used topically to soothe skin irritations or mild inflammations. This dual use, between sensory aesthetics and ancestral pharmacopoeia, highlights the plant's importance in global ethnobotanical heritage.

Essential Toxicity and Health Precautions

Despite its aromatic virtues, Mesk-Ellil is a potentially toxic plant if its berries or foliage are ingested or mishandled. Its powerful active ingredients can cause adverse reactions if not properly managed. For your safety, it is imperative not to use this plant for medicinal purposes without the advice of a healthcare professional. A cautious approach is essential to enjoy its fragrance with complete peace of mind.

- Planting and cultivation:

  • Plant night blooming jasmine just below the collar in a 5-liter pot with good horticultural potting soil.
  • Drain the bottom of the pot well with pozzolana (volcanic rock).
  • Lightly pack the substrate with your fingers.
  • Water the plant directly at the base of the stem.
  • Acclimate it in partial shade for 3 to 5 days before placing it in full sun.
  • In mild climates, it is possible to plant it directly in the ground after acclimating it.

It will generally bloom from the first year; the more sun it receives, the more fragrant flowers it will produce.

- Soil type:

Cestrum nocturnum needs a substrate rich in organic matter to grow properly.

- Exposure:

It must be placed in full sun so that it can grow well and bloom in abundance.

- Temperatures and hardiness:

The plant loves temperatures above 25°C, where it will thrive and grow very quickly. This exotic shrub is sensitive to cold; it withstands low temperatures down to 5°C but will unfortunately not survive freezing winter temperatures.

- Watering:

Despite the fact that the Mesk-Ellil plant is tropical, it often requires regular watering during the summer period. Mulching the base with grass clippings will limit the frequency of watering and provide it with nitrogen.

- Multiplication:

The "midnight perfume" can be propagated in two different ways: either by sowing seeds at the beginning of the summer season, or by taking stem cuttings 10 to 15 cm long from early spring until the end of summer.

- Maintenance:

To maintain it well, simply cut away dead wood once a year. It is also recommended to prune it slightly starting in November.
