Description

Astragalus, also known as Huang qi, milk-vetch, or locoweed, is a small plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. It is native to America but is now also found in Asia and Europe. It is a small plant with deeply divided, silky foliage.

The leaves are compound and pinnate, offering a delicate and elegant appearance. They are often green but can vary in shade. Each leaf consists of several leaflets, which are narrow, elongated, and arranged alternately. Their texture is often hairy, giving them a soft touch.

Its flowers generally grow in clusters and are distinguished by their beauty. Each flower is composed of five petals, often irregular, forming a characteristic shape that attracts pollinators. The flowers are tubular with prominent stamens.

Its fruits take the form of elongated pods, often slightly curved. At maturity, these pods open to release the seeds. The texture of the fruit is smooth and sometimes fuzzy. The pods are often grouped in clusters, adding visual charm to the plant.

The seeds of Huang qi are small, bean-shaped, and brown in color.

- Properties and Uses:

Astragalus is a fascinating plant, deeply rooted in the traditions of several continents.
In North America, certain varieties were nicknamed "Locoweed" by settlers, a term reflecting the observations of indigenous tribes, including the Navajo, during their ceremonies and studies of wild flora.
At the same time, other species of Astragalus have held a fundamental place in Asian ethnobotany for centuries, where they are admired for their natural resilience.

Classified as an adaptogenic plant in traditional pharmacopoeias, Astragalus is studied for its ability to support the body against environmental stress factors.
Its historical use, particularly in China, makes it one of the most documented roots in world herbalism.
Its complex phytochemical profile makes it a preferred subject of study for enthusiasts of plants with strong character.

Do not consume without the medical advice of a healthcare professional.

- Germination and Sowing:

  • The ideal period to sow milk-vetch begins in May.
  • Sow the seeds in a mixture of equal parts potting soil and sand.
  • Cover them with 2 to 3 millimeters of fine potting soil.
  • Water gently with a hand sprayer.
  • Germination usually begins 3 to 4 weeks after sowing.

- Substrate and Soil Type:

It thrives in a well-draining substrate. A mixture of light potting soil, sand, and gravel is ideal for optimal growth. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH is also recommended to favor its development.

- Exposure:

This small plant prefers a very sunny exposure. Direct light for several hours a day promotes its development and flowering. However, it can tolerate partial shade, especially during the hottest periods of summer.

- Temperature and Hardiness:

It develops very well in temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. While it is frost-resistant, it is preferable to protect young plants from extreme temperatures during their first year of planting.

- Watering and Irrigation:

Watering should be moderate; it is essential to let the soil dry out between waterings to avoid the risk of root rot. During the active growth period, watering every 2 days is recommended, but always sparingly. In winter, reduce watering as the plant enters its dormant phase.

- Pests:

Astragalus is sometimes attacked by various pests that can compromise its growth. The most common include aphids, caterpillars, and mites (also known as red spider mites).
