Giant White Bird is an exotic perennial plant from the Strelitziaceae family. This variety produces stunning bird-shaped flowers in blue and white. Originally from South Africa, it is now found throughout the tropics. In its natural habitat, it can grow up to 10 meters in height.
It possesses impressive foliage with large, dark green, leathery, and long leaves that can reach 1.5 meters. The leaves are arrow-shaped and arranged alternately on thick stems, giving the plant a lush and structured appearance.
Flowering occurs in summer, manifesting as large plume-like inflorescences with brilliant white bracts and flowers that resemble birds. The bloom is spectacular and evokes a tropical scene.
After flowering, the plant produces capsule-shaped fruits that turn yellow and then brown upon maturity. These fruits contain the seeds and have a compact appearance.
White Bird of Paradise seeds from Strelitzia nicolai are black with a distinctive orange fuzz (aril) on top. They are oval or sometimes rounded, relatively small in size, and have a hard shell.
It has great ornamental value. Its wide leaves are reminiscent of those of a banana tree. Its highly aesthetic growth habit brings an immediate tropical effect to a garden or interior. Its large size allows it to structure spaces, making it a centerpiece in living rooms, verandas, or entrance halls.
As a semi-tropical species, it is challenging to cultivate outdoors in temperate climates. It must be placed in a very sunny location. However, in regions with mild climates (Mediterranean or oceanic), it can be planted outdoors to give the garden an exotic feel. It can be planted in rows to form dense, evergreen natural privacy screens and can also be grown in large pots on a terrace.
This plant creates a soothing and relaxing atmosphere. It is also highly sought after for exotic floral arrangements because the flowers are very long-lasting. Like many large tropical plants, it helps improve air quality by absorbing certain pollutants.
Strelitzia nicolai grows very fast in well-drained, humus-rich soil. A mixture of 80% universal potting soil with 10% sand or perlite will ensure good soil aeration and optimal growth.
It requires a full sun exposure or bright filtered light. A sunny position will promote the development of its foliage.
Native to Southern Africa, it loves warm temperatures above 15°C. It has low hardiness and must be protected from the cold if grown outdoors in temperate zones, as it will not survive winter frosts.
Water moderately, allowing the top of the substrate to dry out between waterings. In summer, regular watering is necessary, but in winter, reduce the frequency to once every 15 days to avoid excess moisture.
It is primarily multiplied by division of the rhizomes or by sowing seeds. Division is the simplest and fastest method to obtain a new plant.
