Description

Reed canary grass, also known as gardener's garters, ribbon grass, or Phalaris arundinacea in Latin, is a perennial grass of Eurasian origin. It is a fast-growing, monocotyledonous species belonging to the Poaceae family. It typically reaches 50 cm in height and forms a dense clump.

The evergreen foliage of Phalaris is characterized by long, narrow, and often flat leaves. The highly decorative leaves are green and white, appearing striped and feeling slightly rough to the touch.

Root system of ribbon grass is rhizomatous, allowing it to spread and form dense colonies. This type of root contributes to its drought resistance and enables the plant to establish itself in various soil types.

Gardener's garters seeds are small, thin, generally oval, and brownish to blackish in color. They are contained in a panicle-shaped inflorescence that transforms into a spike during maturation. The seeds are easily dispersed by the wind.

- Uses:

Reed canary grass is often found in wetlands and along the banks of rivers and lakes. It can help filter nutrients, thereby contributing to the improvement of water quality in these areas.

Phalaris arundinacea is primarily used in landscaping for border creation due to its hardiness, aesthetic appeal, and its ability to attract wildlife, particularly birds and insects.

Ribbon grass contains alkaloids that may have psychotropic effects. However, its use for medicinal purposes must be approached with caution and in compliance with local legislation.
Do not consume for psychoactive or medicinal effects; cultivate solely for the preservation of the botanical species.

- Cultivation and Planting:

  • Plant your Reed canary grass directly into a large 5-liter pot or directly into the garden soil.
  • Be sure to use a horticultural potting soil rich in organic matter.
  • It is important to water immediately after planting so that the plant can establish itself quickly.
  • Place the plant in a sunny location.

- Soil Type / Substrate:

Reed canary grass grows very well in all types of soil. For pot cultivation, it is important to ensure good drainage at the bottom using clay pebbles.

- Watering / Humidity:

In summer, remember to water the Phalaris plant 2 to 3 times a week, especially if it is in a pot. Once established in the ground, it does not require any specific irrigation.

- Exposure / Light:

Gardener's garters acclimates to all kinds of light; it enjoys indirect sunlight as much as full sun.

- Temperature / Hardiness:

Ribbon grass grows very well in temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. It is a very hardy plant that easily withstands very cold temperatures, dropping as low as -15°C.

- Reproduction / Multiplication:

In addition to reproduction via its seeds, Phalaris can also spread through the division of its rhizomes, which encourages its expansion in the natural environment.
