Description

Skullcap, or Scutellaria in Latin, is a beautiful, branched perennial plant from the Scutellariaceae family. Its size ranges from 20 to 50 cm in height by late summer. It originates from North America, specifically Canada, and remains quite rare on the European continent. It enters vegetative dormancy from October until early May.

The four-angled stems bear opposite leaves, adopting a spearhead silhouette. The blade, sometimes serrated on the edges, features a velvety surface. The foliage shifts from spring green nuances to deeper shades, forming a compact vegetal screen.

The scullcap is recognized by its hood-shaped inflorescences, where the rounded upper part protectively houses the stamens. Arranged in clusters at the top of the branches, these tubular flowers are adorned in intense blue or purple during the summer period. Once the flowers fade, the calyx transforms into a small rigid capsule whose shape recalls that of a small bowl or a tiny shield.

- Interests:

The hooded skullcap is distinguished by its delicate blue flowers, giving it a discreet decorative appearance. It combines aesthetic interest with medicinal value. Very resistant and easy to grow, it finds its place in planters as well as in open ground. This honey-producing plant is a perfect addition to a medicinal or ecological garden. Aside from its ornamental use, this species possesses numerous widely used medicinal virtues. It contains unique flavonoids, notably scutellarin.

Its benefits and properties are many: sedative, calming, antispasmodic, sleep aid... It was traditionally used notably by indigenous peoples of North America. Scutellaria lends itself to several uses as a medicinal plant; mainly the aerial parts of the plant are used in infusions, herbal teas, or mother tinctures.

Do not consume: Always consult a healthcare professional.

- Planting and cultivation:

  • Plant the skullcap in a 3 to 5-liter pot with good horticultural potting soil.
  • Water copiously during planting.
  • Place it in a shaded area.
  • It is also possible to cultivate it directly in the ground in a shaded zone.

- Soil nature:

The development of this plant requires fertile, aerated soil capable of retaining light moisture while draining excess water. An addition of humus combined with a draining material, such as fine gravel, ensures a healthy root environment.

- Light requirements:

A location benefiting from medium sunlight or partial shade allows for brightly colored floral spikes. In regions with scorching summers, protection from the midday sun prevents the foliage from drying out prematurely.

- Cold resistance:

Perfectly adapted to temperate climates, this perennial species survives significant temperature drops during winter without difficulty. Its only fragility lies in heatwave summers with temperatures exceeding 35°C for several weeks.

- Hydration / irrigation:

The water supply must remain constant during the vegetative cycle to preserve the flexibility and vigor of the stems. Applying a layer of organic mulch on the surface helps stabilize soil moisture and limits water requirements.

- Propagation techniques:

Reproduction can be initiated by sowing or by separating root offsets at the end of the season. During the summer period, it is also possible to take segments of non-flowering stems for cuttings.

- Maintenance:

At the end of summer, the aerial part dries out, and it becomes necessary to prune it. It will then form an extensive root network during the 8 months of dormancy.
