Snake Gourd, also known as Long-fruited Gourd, Lace Flower is a beautiful annual tropical climbing plant native to Asia, Australia, and the islands of the western Pacific. This magnificent and unusual fast-growing species belongs to the Cucurbitaceae (gourd) family. At maturity, it can reach a height (or length) of up to 2 meters.
The flowers of Trichosanthes cucumerina are hermaphroditic. They are white, highly fringed, and resemble delicate lace, measuring 3 to 5 cm in diameter. Flowering occurs during the warm summer months.
The fruit is gourd-shaped, very long (measuring 30 to 150 cm), and twists like a snake. Widely used in Asian cuisine, its soft flesh is highly prized. Almost all parts of the plant are edible: young fruits, shoots, leaves, and tendrils are consumed as vegetables, usually cooked to remove their bitterness.
Snake Gourd seeds are irregular, beige with brown stripes, and have wavy edges.
The leaves are lobed, with a palmate shape and serrated edges, reaching up to 20–30 cm in width. They are a vibrant green, giving the plant a fresh and attractive appearance.
It is primarily cultivated for its long, exceptional fruit, which can sometimes reach up to 2 meters in length. It is cooked as a vegetable in various dishes such as soups or stir-fries and offers several nutritional benefits. The advantage of these fruits is their mildness, making them easy to incorporate into recipes.
The shoots, tendrils, and foliage are also eaten as leafy greens.
Thanks to its beautiful, highly original, and fragrant flowers, the Snake Gourd is an excellent ornamental plant. it is perfect for gardens, especially for decorating arbors and pergolas during the summer. Beyond its decorative appeal, it is easy to grow.
In medicine, the fruit is considered an anti-parasitic. Its medicinal properties may also have anti-inflammatory effects and help treat certain digestive disorders. Do not use for medicinal purposes without seeking medical advice.
It prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter and humus. A mixture of garden soil, compost, and sand is suitable. Ensure there is good drainage at the bottom of the pot.
This magnificent lace-flowered vine requires full sun for optimal growth and beautiful flowering. A minimum of 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day is strongly recommended.
The Snake Gourd grows best in warm temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. Unfortunately, it does not tolerate frost. Below 10°C, growth slows down, and damage may occur if temperatures drop too low.
Like many cucurbits, it needs regular watering. However, it is important to avoid excess water which could lead to root rot. During periods of active growth in spring and summer, water moderately once every two days at the base of the plant.
The simplest way to reproduce the Lace Flower is by seed, though it is also possible to propagate it via cuttings in mid-spring.
Trichosanthes cucumerina is sensitive to various pests and diseases, including aphids and sometimes mites. Fungal diseases, such as powdery mildew and root rot, can also cause significant damage.
Remember to provide a trellis or support for the plant once it begins to grow vigorously.
