Jerusalem Cherry, also known as Winter Cherry or Solanum pseudocapsicum, is a small plant from the Solanaceae family. It originates from tropical and subtropical regions and is commonly found in Colombia, Peru, and other countries in that area. It is sometimes referred to as the "Love Apple" or "Cobbler's Orange."
Its leaves are oval to lanceolate, measuring 3 to 10 cm long. They are a brilliant green, sometimes with a slight glaucous tint, and have a slightly waxy texture.
The stems are robust and upright, reaching a height of 30 to 60 cm. They are green but can exhibit purple hues, especially under intense light. The stems are highly branched, contributing to the plant's bushy appearance.
The flowers appear in summer; they are white with yellow stamens. The plant produces round, berry-like fruits that turn bright orange upon reaching maturity.
It is cultivated worldwide, primarily as an ornamental indoor species, though it can also be found in outdoor gardens. In tropical climates, it is appreciated for the vibrant color its fruits provide.
However, one must refrain from tasting the fruits due to their toxicity. They can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and headaches. Keep them out of reach of children and pets. It is an indoor plant that can easily brighten a space and is an excellent choice for original interior decoration.
The soil should be slightly acidic to neutral. It is essential to avoid overly compact or waterlogged soils, as this can lead to root rot.
This plant loves light and thrives in bright locations with at least 4 to 6 hours of direct light per day. Adequate sunlight promotes flowering and fruit development.
It requires regular irrigation, but it is important to let the soil dry slightly between waterings. Excess water can cause fungal diseases and root issues.
Start by taking healthy stems 10 to 15 cm long, ensuring they have a few leaves. Remove the lower leaves to prevent rot. Plant the cuttings in a mixture of potting soil and sand, then water lightly.
It is susceptible to various pests, such as aphids, scale insects, and spider mites. Regarding diseases, it can be affected by powdery mildew, a fungal disease that appears as a white powdery coating on the leaves.
