Description

Mushroom Plant, also known by its Latin name Rungia klossii, belongs to the Acanthaceae family. This rare, fast-growing exotic plant is an unusual perennial variety native to Papua New Guinea. It typically reaches a height of 30 to 50 cm.

Mushroom Plant seeds are black, perfectly round, smooth, and measure only 2 millimeters in diameter.

Its leaves grow in pairs and are evergreen, thick, very glossy, and deep green, measuring about 4 cm in length. Their most remarkable feature is their distinct flavor of button mushrooms.

Flowering occurs late in the year, during the autumn. The flowers are blue with hints of violet inside, tongue-shaped, and odorless.

- Uses:

It is in the kitchen that Rungia klossii shines the most. Its crunchy, deep forest-green leaves develop an intense mushroom aroma once chewed. They can be used fresh in salads to surprise guests, or quickly sautéed in a wok. Unlike many aromatic plants, it does not lose its flavor during cooking, making it an excellent natural substitute for seasoning omelets, quiches, or risottos.

Beyond its unique taste, this plant is a true powerhouse of health benefits. It is particularly rich in calcium (containing more than milk by weight), vitamin C, and iron. It also contains a significant amount of chlorophyll and beta-carotene, making it a nutritional supplement of choice for vegetarian diets or for boosting the mineral density of daily meals.

In Papua New Guinea, it has been cultivated for centuries not only as a food staple but also for its therapeutic virtues. It is credited with anti-inflammatory properties and is traditionally used to aid digestion. Its ease of cultivation in tropical zones or indoors in our latitudes makes it an accessible "medicinal" plant, ideal for naturally strengthening the immune system on a daily basis.
Do not consume without medical advice from a healthcare professional.

- Planting and Cultivation:

  • Plant mushroom leaves in a 5-liter pot filled with potting soil rich in organic matter, ensuring the root collar is at surface level.
  • Line the bottom of the pot with a few centimeters of clay pebbles to ensure proper drainage.
  • Water generously at the base immediately after planting.
  • Place in a very bright spot indoors or in partial shade if grown outdoors.

- Soil Type / Substrate:

It thrives in a substrate rich in organic matter; a good quality compost is ideal. Avoid using compact, heavy clay soils.

- Exposure / Light:

Rungia klossii appreciates bright light but cannot tolerate direct sunlight. A shaded or partially shaded exposure is highly recommended.

- Temperature and Hardiness:

This amazing plant grows best in temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. Growth will stop if temperatures drop below 15°C. The Mushroom Plant is frost-sensitive and will not survive freezing temperatures; it must be brought indoors during the winter.

- Watering / Irrigation:

It is a "thirsty" plant that requires daily watering during the height of summer, but in small quantities. If the foliage begins to turn yellow, it is a sign of overwatering. In this case, wait a few days until the soil feels dry. In winter, one watering per week is sufficient.

- Multiplication / Reproduction:

While growing from seed is relatively straightforward, the fastest and most effective method of propagation is through stem cuttings. Cut a 10 cm shoot, remove the bottom row of leaves, and plant it in a pot of horticultural soil. For best results, use the "smothering" method (covering the cutting to maintain high humidity).

- Pests and Diseases:

The Rungia is generally disease-resistant. However, its leaves are a favorite of slugs and snails during the spring.

- Maintenance:

To encourage a high yield of leaves, it is recommended to prune the plant regularly just above the nodes. This will result in a bushier, denser plant. Remove any yellowing leaves at the base of the plant as it grows.
