Silk Tree is a Mediterranean tree native to East and South Asia. Like the acacia, it belongs to the Fabaceae family. It has a spreading habit, reaching about 3 to 4 meters in height, and has a moderate growth rate.
Silk tree seeds come from the Albizia julibrissin are smooth, oval, flattened, light brown in color, and measure 8 millimeters in length.
Its flowers are magnificent, earning their name because they resemble finely cut pink and white pom-poms.
The fruits are long, flat, shiny brown pods measuring 15 to 30 cm, containing numerous seeds.
Its foliage consists of many small green leaflets arranged in a feather-like, alternate pattern along the stem.
Albizia is primarily valued for its ornamental qualities in gardens and parks across temperate and subtropical regions. Its feathery, fragrant pink-hued flowers, along with its delicate foliage that closes at night, make it an elegant choice for creating natural shade. Its rapid growth and spreading silhouette are particularly sought after for landscaping.
In traditional medicine, especially in Asia, the bark and flowers are used for their health benefits; it is sometimes called the "tree of happiness." However, these uses require great caution and the advice of a healthcare professional, as certain parts of the tree can be toxic.
Do not consume.
From an ecological and agroforestry perspective, Albizia plays an important role due to its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil through its roots. It is often used to restore poor soils or to provide quality fodder for livestock in certain tropical regions. Its wood, light yet durable, is also used locally for making small furniture, firewood, or handcrafted tools.
The Silk Acacia needs mineral-rich soil; a potting soil generous in organic matter is perfect. For pot cultivation, ensure the bottom is well-drained with gravel or small stones.
This tree must be exposed to full sun to bloom properly. For artificial lighting, neon, HPS, or MH lamps are preferred.
It requires water during the summer when the soil becomes too dry. Never overwater the plant when growing in a pot.
It grows well between 15 and 25°C. The plant is relatively hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -18°C. However, protect the plant during its first 2 or 3 years while it is still young.
It can be reproduced by seed or by semi-ripe stem cuttings (12 cm long) taken during the summer.
Its main pests are leafhoppers and caterpillars. It can also be affected by fungal diseases such as rust or powdery mildew.
