Description

Winter Cherry, also known as Jerusalem Cherry is a shrub belonging to the Solanaceae family. It is native to South America.

The flowers are small and star-shaped, measuring 1 to 2 cm in diameter. They appear in clusters and possess five white petals. The center of the flower contains yellow stamens, creating an aesthetic contrast. These flowers appear during the warm season and are pollinated by insects.

Its fruits start as green and progressively turn bright orange upon maturity; they are round in shape and measure approximately 1 to 2 cm in diameter. They are highly decorative and can remain on the plant for a long period, even after ripening.

Jerusalem Cherry seeds from Solanum pseudocapsicum are flat, circular in shape, and yellow. They closely resemble chili or bell pepper seeds.

- Properties / Uses:

It is widely cultivated as an ornamental indoor shrub. Its small, shiny red-orange berries and green leaves make it an attractive decoration. Indeed, its small fruits look very much like tiny tomatoes. It is a plant of choice for floral arrangements and winter decorations.

It is important to note that its fruits are unfortunately not edible due to their toxicity. They are intended for ornamental use only.

- Germination and Sowing:

  • The most favorable period to sow Winter Cherry is from April until the end of July.
  • Prepare a tray of fine horticultural potting soil.
  • Sprinkle the seeds on top.
  • Cover them with 2 to 3 millimeters of substrate.
  • Water the culture gently by spraying.
  • Place in a warm and humid environment, such as a greenhouse, at a temperature between 20 and 25°C.
  • Germination generally takes place 2 to 3 weeks after sowing in the greenhouse.

- Substrate / Soil Type:

It prefers a light and well-drained substrate. A mixture of potting soil and sand is ideal for promoting good root aeration.

- Exposure / Light:

It enjoys a bright exposure, but it is best to shield it from direct sunlight, especially during the hottest hours of the day.

- Temperature / Hardiness:

It is not hardy and grows best when temperatures are ideally between 18 and 24°C. In winter, it is advisable to place it in a warmer room to encourage its growth.

- Watering:

Watering should be moderate and regular. It is important to let the substrate dry slightly between waterings to avoid excess moisture. Generally, watering every 7 to 10 days is recommended, though this frequency may vary depending on climate conditions and the season.
